Every night for a while now I’ve done exactly the same thing. Nothing has really changed in my night time routine, other than this tiny detail, but it has changed my life. While before I might have worried, tossed and turned, unable to shake the cares of life from my head, or stop my thoughts whirring away, now I slip peacefully into a wonderful tranquil space of dreams and relaxation.
Every time I go to sleep these days, I put on this song. The effect is extraordinary. I sleep, I dream, I’m at peace, and all through the simple, soulful singing of one of my favourite musicians, Sting.
Sting has been a musical favourite of mine for years, and I’ve always loved this song, even if I’ve only recently discovered this amazing acoustic version. For some reason its simplicity and unplugged nature speaks to me, and soothes me, providing the perfect peaceful sleep.
Sting’s career hardly needs explaining, as he’s been hugely successful and a massive part of the music scene in the UK since his band, The Police, burst into life in the late 70s. His career has been varied and exceptional, as a singer, musician and actor. He’s won all the awards it is possible to win, from Grammys to Brits to Golden Globes, and was even recognised by the Queen with a CBE for his contribution to music. As a solo artist and as Sting and The Police, he has sold over 100 million records worldwide, and he remains a fundamental and important part of the musical landscape even today, sharing a Grammy in 2019 with the Jamaican artist Shaggy.
This amazing yet incredibly rare acoustic version of Moon Over Bourbon Street was originally part of the music documentary “Walking to New Orleans”, made with Jools Holland. It’s a delightful, humorous yet touching film about his love of the Blues, and the extraordinary music of the Delta, yet in a documentary packed with amazing music this song just stands out for me beyond all the others.
Take a listen, and let the cares of the world wash away. Trust me, this is a beautiful piece of musical genius.
Sweet dreams…
